Focus on Partnership with China: International Summer School Has Started at Polytech

The International Polytechnic Summer School — 2026 is taking place at SPbPU. This annual project unites students from different countries, and in the year of the Russia-China cross-partnership in education, the focus is on Chinese participants. Polytechnic, which collaborates with more than 100 universities in China, has welcomed the first group of students from three leading partner universities: Zhejiang, Northwestern Polytechnical, and China University of Geosciences.

Zhejiang University ranks among the top three universities in China in the national ranking and holds high positions in global rankings (QS — 49, THE — 39, ARWU — 24). The cooperation between SPbPU and Zhejiang University covers a wide range of areas: materials science and additive technologies, energy, biomedicine, hydraulic research, and the humanities. Over the past 10 years, scientists from both universities have published 22 joint articles and more than 130 highly ranked works. In November 2025, SPbPU was granted the status of anchor partner of Zhejiang University with a focus on developing cooperation in hydraulics and mechatronic systems. Over five years, more than 800 students from Zhejiang University have studied in SPbPU’s international educational programs, including summer and winter schools.

The Northwest Polytechnic University is a key partner of SPbPU. Students from this university have already participated in the Polytechnic’s winter schools, having completed the course “Advanced Materials Processing Technologies.”

China University of Geosciences is another important partner of SPbPU. The universities develop joint bachelor’s and master’s educational programs, conduct research in the fields of intelligent control systems, energy, materials science, additive technologies, and mechanical engineering.

The first stream of the educational program of the International Polytechnic Summer School-2026 includes training in five areas: “Artificial Intelligence Tools for Life and Work,” “Digital Technologies in Energy,” “Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development,” “Nuclear Energy,” and “Russian Language and Culture.”

The international summer school is not just about studying. For participants from China, excursions around the SPbPU campus were organized, as well as visits to institutes, laboratories, research centers, and student associations. Chinese students get acquainted with Russian culture, traditions, and mentality, acquire basic language skills in a comfortable environment, and interact with polytechnic students. They also go on tours around Saint Petersburg.

Representatives of the Northwestern Polytechnic University shared their impressions of participating in the summer school.

“Two weeks at SPbPU flew by in the blink of an eye: we were surrounded by genuine warmth, the lectures captivated us from the first minutes, and the cultural excursions became a real celebration. The students gained immense benefit from this trip, and I could not have wished for a better host university, — said teacher Shi Wenzong. — I wholeheartedly thank the team for making this polytechnic summer forever remain in our memory.”

Student Ji Zhihan added: “This course allowed me to significantly deepen my knowledge in Python, programming, and artificial intelligence—especially regarding the principles of operation and application of neural network algorithms and large language models. Besides studying, I was able to fully immerse myself in the unique cultural atmosphere and distinctive character of Saint Petersburg.”

“In our course, students became acquainted with various laboratories where elements of cyber-physical systems are studied, developed practical cases for solving tasks and applying advanced artificial intelligence technologies, and also worked on developing interaction scenarios and process and subsystem synchronization schemes. I hope that the obtained knowledge will be useful in their further studies and professional activities.”— commented Vyacheslav Potehin, Director of the Polytech-Cyberphysics Center, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Tools for Life and Work program, and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management.

Based on the results of the first batch, colleagues from partner universities plan to increase the enrollment of students in the summer and winter schools in the future.
