Washington, July 26 /Xinhua/ — Citizens of many countries around the world currently have a more positive attitude toward China than toward the United States. These data are contained in a report published on July 15 by the Pew Research Center.
Sociologists surveyed more than 42,000 adult respondents in 36 countries from February 8 to May 13, 2026. The researchers were interested in international public opinion about China and the USA, their roles in foreign policy, and other issues.
In most of the 36 countries, the number of people with a favorable view of China exceeded the number of those who look positively at the United States. The gap is particularly large in some countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East.
The closest neighbors of Americans — Canadians and Mexicans — also have a better attitude toward China than toward the United States.
As for perceptions of foreign policy, people in middle-income countries, including in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region, expressed more concerns about U.S. overseas actions than those of China.
On average, 75 percent of respondents stated that the United States heavily interferes in the affairs of other countries. In almost all countries where the survey was conducted, respondents were more likely to associate the label “a country that interferes in the affairs of others” with the United States rather than with China.
Respondents in many middle-income countries also named China as a more reliable partner than the United States and more often answered that the PRC contributes to peace and stability worldwide.
