Taipei, July 26 /Xinhua/ — On Saturday, a large protest rally was held in Taipei against the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration’s failure to ensure food safety and neglect of people’s livelihoods.
Tens of thousands of residents of Taiwan, despite the scorching heat, took to Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the island’s administration office.
A major scandal related to food safety erupted in Taiwan after excessively high levels of carcinogens were found in soy salad oil, causing serious concern and panic on the island.
A large number of people from all corners of the island gathered for a rally to express their dissatisfaction with the island administration. Many of them came with their families, including elderly people and children.
Protesters held posters with the inscriptions “No failures in food safety and concealment of information in public health” and “Collapse of the food security system – suffering for the people.” Those present also chanted slogans such as “Restore food safety!” and “Lai Qingde must apologize!”.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an noted that more than 1,380 schools across Taiwan were affected by the oil incident, with about 100,000 students and teachers impacted in Taipei alone. He urged the head of the Taiwanese administration, Lai Ching-te, to listen to the people’s voices and properly investigate what happened.
Chairwoman of the Kuomintang of China, Zheng Liwen, who also joined the protesters, addressed the public with a call to collectively defend food safety and achieve the overthrow of the shameless DPP administration.
Many other political parties and civil groups on the island also expressed their support for the rally.
At around 8 p.m., the event host announced that more than 200,000 people had come to the rally venue.
