Tehran, July 24 /Xinhua/ — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday condemned the threat by the United States to use Iranian assets under its control to compensate for possible damage caused to ships and maritime cargo, calling it a “provocative precedent.”
“The confiscation of another state’s assets to cover unrelated future claims creates a provocative precedent,” he stated on the social network X. “Those who welcome the use of these funds or benefit from them should remember: once governments begin to consider confiscation of property as normal, no one’s assets can be considered safe anymore. The resulting chaos will be neither pleasant nor peaceful.”
A. Araghchi’s statement came after US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that “any damage caused to ships, cargoes, and everything related to them will be paid for with funds seized from Iranian accounts that are in the possession and under the control of the United States.”
“The compensation can be very significant, but nevertheless, it is a fair and equitable solution,” wrote D. Trump on the social network Truth Social. –0–
