Bangkok, July 23 /Xinhua/ — A group of unknown people opened fire at a checkpoint in Narathiwat province in southern Thailand on Wednesday evening and threw homemade bombs at it, resulting in the death of five military personnel and injuries to six civilians, local media reported.

The incident occurred at around 6:45 PM local time. Six attackers arrived in a pickup truck at the entrance to a checkpoint in the Ra-ngae district of Narathiwat province and carried out an attack using firearms and bombs, after which they fled in their vehicle.

Security agencies are searching for the attackers. The highest level of security measures has been introduced in the area, and all checkpoints have been instructed to remain highly vigilant.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Chanvirakul on Wednesday evening called on the relevant agencies to fulfill their duties, adding that the process of peaceful negotiations in the southern border provinces will continue. –0–
