Tashkent, July 23 /Xinhua/ — Construction has begun in Uzbekistan on a new Tashkent — Samarkand highway costing about 2.2 billion US dollars with the participation of Chinese enterprises. This was reported on Wednesday by the press service of the country’s president.
The six-lane highway, stretching 282 km, will pass through 13 districts of the Tashkent, Syrdarya, Jizzakh, and Samarkand regions, with a population of over 2 million people. The project includes the construction of 92 bridges, 28 overpasses, 60 tunnel-type crossings, as well as underground passages and culverts. The maximum speed on flat sections will reach up to 150 km/h.
“After the project is implemented, every one of our compatriots will definitely feel the advantages of the new road. Travel time from Tashkent to Samarkand will be reduced from the current five hours to two and a half hours,” noted the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The road’s capacity will be from 60 to 80 thousand vehicles per day, with commissioning scheduled for 2030. The first phase is being implemented jointly with Chinese partners under the EPC model.
The head of state wished success to the Chinese partners, domestic and foreign specialists, engineers, and builders, emphasizing that for the first time in the history of Uzbekistan, such an eco-friendly and innovative highway is being constructed.
