Manila, July 22 /Xinhua/ — China pays close attention to its relations with Papua New Guinea and is pleased to see the country play a more significant role in international affairs. This was stated on Wednesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Van Yi, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Politburo, made the corresponding statement during a meeting in the Philippine capital Manila with Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkachenko.
Reminding that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Wang Yi pointed out that China is ready to jointly implement the important agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries with Papua New Guinea, deepen cooperation in various fields, and continuously enrich the content of bilateral relations of comprehensive strategic partnership.
The head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that China highly values Papua New Guinea’s decision to close its economic office in Taipei. According to Wang Yi, this decision is another important measure by the Papua New Guinean government to practically implement the One China principle and will contribute to further strengthening the political foundation of relations between the two countries.
The Chinese diplomat added that this step will also serve as an example for other countries in matters related to Taiwanese institutions.
China’s development of relations with the island states of the Pacific Ocean is not connected with geopolitical games and is not aimed at creating a so-called sphere of influence, Wang Yi emphasized. He added that these states have the right to independently choose partners for development, and a third party should not interfere in this choice.
J. Tkachenko, for his part, stated that Papua New Guinea firmly adheres to the One China principle and considers Taiwan a part of China. The closure of the economic office in Taipei was a clear and unequivocal signal of the country’s resolute intention to develop relations with the PRC, the minister pointed out, adding that this decision was unanimously made by the highest leadership of Papua New Guinea and the country will ensure its implementation.
J. Tkachenko noted that Papua New Guinea is ready to deepen cooperation with China in various areas, including trade, investment, infrastructure, medicine, and healthcare, as well as to strengthen interaction and coordination within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and other multilateral platforms. –0–
