Kinshasa, July 22 /Xinhua/ — The number of deaths from the ongoing Ebola fever outbreak in Africa exceeded 1,000 on Wednesday. This is according to the latest data released by the health authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/ and Uganda.
As reported on Wednesday in the epidemiological situation report by the Ministry of Health of the DRC, as of July 20, the country had confirmed 2,473 cases of Ebola fever infection, including 999 fatal cases.
Uganda has registered 20 confirmed cases of infection, including two fatalities. Thus, the total number of deaths in the two epidemic-affected countries has reached 1,001.
An outbreak of disease caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus was announced on May 15 in the Ituri province in eastern DRC, after which the epidemic spread to the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo.
According to the Ministry of Health of the DRC, as of July 20, 737 patients were in isolation or receiving hospital treatment, and another 482 people had recovered. –0–
