The first All-Russian Student Conference and Olympiad “Fundamentals of Clinical Dentistry” was held in St. Petersburg, organized by the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. Nine teams from leading medical universities in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Smolensk, Saratov, Voronezh, and Kursk took part in it.
The RUDN team “Smiles of the Peoples” worthily represented the university and won the Grand Prix of the conference, as well as took prize-winning places in the Olympiad.
“Smart” dental adhesive
At the conference, students of RUDN presented a report on the results of a large research team project under the guidance of a professorZurab Sulikovich Khabadze.
Topic — “Development of a ‘smart’ new generation dental adhesive based on 10-MDP controlled polymerization.”
Relevance of the researchis due to the high demands on modern adhesive systems: the inclusion of functional monomers in their composition should increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
Research objectiveA — improvement in the effectiveness of dentin caries treatment by perfecting the adhesive protocol using a functional monomer based on MDP-10.
Research objectives:
- comparative evaluation of MDP-containing adhesive systems;
- Synthesis of the MDP-10 monomer under experimental conditions
- evaluation of the cytotoxicity of the synthesized monomer;
- Analysis of the thixotropic properties of adhesive system components using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The report caused great interest at the conference. Based on the results of the work of the judging panel and the audience vote, the study was unanimously recognized as the best and awarded the Grand Prix.
Olympiad: theory and practice
The team “Smiles of the Peoples” also showed itself instudent olympiad. During the two competition days, the participants demonstrated deep knowledge both in theoretical issues and confident manual skills.
A special moment of the first day was the excursion to the museum of the history of the Military Medical Academy. Here, the students were able to touch centuries-old relics and feel themselves part of the great medical tradition.
After the trip, RUDN students shared their emotions about the competition.
“When we learned that the RUDN team “Smiles of the Nations” would participate in the first All-Russian Clinical Dentistry Olympiad, emotions overwhelmed each of us. This was not just a chance to prove ourselves—it was a challenge that we accepted with excitement and pride,” —Gor Avetisyan, captain of the RUDN team.
“From the first minutes of the Olympics, there was an incredible competition: nine teams from the leading medical universities of Russia, strong opponents, each of whom came with a wealth of knowledge and a desire to win. However, despite the competitive spirit, we saw genuine mutual support. We exchanged experiences, advice, helped each other cope with nervousness. This created a very friendly and comfortable atmosphere. Confidence in our abilities came thanks to our mentors. It was precisely their fundamental knowledge, deep preparation, and sincere support that became a solid foundation for us.”At every stage of preparation, they were alongside, inspiring, giving valuable advice, and helping to believe in ourselves. We are grateful to them for making us a team capable of overcoming any difficulties and achieving success,” —Almaz Urazgulov.
One more participant in the competition, Denis Smirnov, noted that participation in the Olympiad became an important life lesson for students.
“We are convinced: when you believe in yourself and feel the shoulder of a mentor, it’s impossible to stop halfway — you can only keep moving forward, towards new heights! The victory of our team is the result of hard work, talent, and team spirit, which the ‘Smiles of the Peoples’ can rightfully be proud of! We thank the organizers for the new experience, and we wish our team even louder victories!”, —Denis Smirnov.
