Beijing, July 22 /Xinhua/ — According to a report published on Tuesday by the National Energy Administration of China, by the end of 2025, the total volume of oil and gas production in China reached a record level, amounting to 420 million tons of oil equivalent.
According to the agency, in 2025, crude oil production reached a record level of 216 million tons, and natural gas production increased by more than 10 billion cubic meters compared to the previous year — such growth rates have been maintained for nine consecutive years. This indicates a significant increase in the country’s level of energy independence.
In 2025, shale oil production in China exceeded 8.5 million tons, which is more than 10 times the figure in 2018.
The report also notes that from 2019 to 2025, the country’s oil and gas sector has fully implemented a seven-year action plan to stimulate the exploration and development of oil and gas fields, resulting in record levels of both reserves and production volumes.
In 2026, the country’s oil and gas sector will begin implementing a new round of strategic campaigns for the exploration and development of oil and gas fields, continue to increase investments in this industry, aiming to maintain crude oil production at a level above 200 million tons for the entire year and a trend of increasing natural gas production.
