Manila, July 21 /Xinhua/ — The swift conclusion of consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea /SCS/ will help ensure peace and stability in the region, keep its future in the hands of regional countries, and prevent external forces from interfering and creating disruptions. This was stated on Tuesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Wan Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the corresponding statement during a meeting with Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamad Hassan, in the Philippine capital Manila.
The head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that China, together with the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), relying on the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, advocates for the early completion of consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and is putting all efforts into this.
According to Wang Yi, both China and Malaysia are at a critical stage of development and rise. He stated that the PRC is ready to jointly seize emerging opportunities with Malaysia, intensify contacts at all levels, deepen comprehensive cooperation, promote exchanges and cooperation at sea, in order to elevate China-Malaysia relations to a higher level.
Emphasizing that ASEAN is an important element of a multipolar world and one of the key forces of the Global South, the head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed hope that Malaysia would effectively utilize its role as the coordinating country in relations between China and ASEAN, protecting the common interests of the parties and ensuring peace and stability in East Asia.
Mohamad Hasan, for his part, stated that the relations between Malaysia and China, as well as between ASEAN and China, are currently experiencing the best period in their history.
He once again reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to the one-China policy and expressed Malaysia’s readiness to make every effort to develop cooperation between ASEAN and China and to jointly safeguard ASEAN’s central role in the regional architecture.
As Mohamad Hassan pointed out, some external countries, having no relation to the South China Sea, constantly try to “flex their muscles” in the SCS. The Malaysian Foreign Minister expressed hope for the swift completion of consultations on the Code of Conduct in the SCS, so that joint efforts can ensure peace and stability in the region. –0–
