Search and rescue operations continue in the eastern regions of Afghanistan following heavy rains and floods that hit the area yesterday. Preliminary data indicate that more than 40 people have died, dozens have been injured, and many are still missing.
According to the UN, the disaster caused serious damage to residential homes, public buildings, and commercial facilities. The extent of the destruction is still being clarified.
UN humanitarian organizations, together with partners, are conducting an assessment of the population’s needs and preparing response measures. Among the top priorities are providing the population with temporary housing, food assistance, medical services, essential items, and psychosocial support.
Mobile medical teams have been sent to the affected areas. Medical facilities have been put on high alert, and additional supplies of medicines, therapeutic nutrition, and food are being transferred.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is providing assistance to the population in cooperation with partners and local authorities. Damage to roads and the mountainous terrain complicate rescue and humanitarian operations.
