A solo exhibition by Sofya Andreeva “Matryonas and Matryoshkas in Search of a Cultural Code” is opening at the Rostokino Gallery of the Exhibition Halls of Moscow association.

The project offers a new perspective on familiar images: at the center is Matrena, combining an ancient totem, a female figure, and stereotypical representations of culture. In a journey through time, she seeks her roots—with both irony and seriousness.

The exhibition includes three series: “Matryonas of the Soviet era,” “Matryonas of the Stone Age,” and “Matryonas with folk ornaments.”

The matryoshka ceases to be a souvenir and becomes a metaphor for the multilayered nature of culture: behind each layer lies a new era and meaning. The artist does not offer ready-made answers but raises questions, inviting the viewer to reflect on how we read cultural codes and how often we mistake a recognizable silhouette for genuine depth.
