Series of strikes on Ukraine
As a result of the strikes carried out over the past weekend on the territory of Ukraine, 12 civilians were killed and dozens were injured. As reported during a briefing in New York by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, two UN humanitarian warehouses were damaged – the World Food Programme in Dnipro and the World Health Organization in the Kyiv region. Employees of UN institutions and the humanitarian partners of the United Nations promptly provided emergency assistance to the affected. Eleven tons of humanitarian cargo were delivered to frontline settlements in the Kherson region. The shipment included bottled drinking water, hygiene kits, first aid kits, and medicines.
Security Council meeting on Haiti
The UN Security Council discussed the crisis in Haiti on Monday, urging the international community to seize the opportunity to change the situation. Despite ongoing violence, the country’s authorities continue preparations for elections: a new electoral decree has been adopted, the budget approved, and voter registration has begun. The International Security Forces fighting banditry, operating with UN support, are conducting patrols and operations against armed groups. The personnel strength of the Forces is planned to be more than doubled. The UN emphasizes that long-term international support, funding, and close cooperation with the Haitian authorities are necessary to stabilize the situation.
World Heritage Committee session
In Busan, Republic of Korea, the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has begun. The Committee will consider nominations for inclusion in the World Heritage List of 30 new sites. Among the nominees are the beaches of Normandy, France, where the Allied landings took place, and medieval castles in southern Lebanon. Additionally, the Committee will assess the conservation status of 147 sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List – many of which have been damaged during recent armed conflicts. As of today, the List contains more than 1,200 sites located in 170 countries worldwide.
Road Traffic Safety
A two-day high-level meeting on road safety opened on Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York, organized by the President of the General Assembly together with the World Health Organization. Its main theme is accelerating the fulfillment of commitments to reduce by 50 percent the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2030. The UN reminds that annually around 1.2 million people die as a result of accidents, with 92 percent of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Participants in the meeting at the UN headquarters will discuss measures to accelerate the implementation of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.
