Beijing, July 20 /Xinhua/ — The three-member crew of the Shenzhou-23 space mission has completed an assessment of their ability to make emergency decisions and monitor emotional states as part of broader efforts to study how prolonged spaceflight affects behavior, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) reported on Monday.
Three crew members, including a woman from the Hong Kong SAR, have been aboard the Tiangong space station for almost two months. One of them will remain in orbit for a year to carry out China’s first program of space research on the human body and to collect data on long-duration astronaut flights.
In the latest weekly video posted by CMSA on Sunday, crew members were seen wearing sensors and virtual reality helmets to monitor brain waves.
These tests are among more than 100 scientific and applied projects being carried out on board the station. In addition to space medicine, the crew also installed a device for experiments in radiation biology in space and an external camera on one of the station’s laboratory modules, as well as conducted testing of an advanced instrument for measuring mass in orbit. According to CMSA, an orbital verification of a new type of space batteries will also be carried out, after which the obtained results are expected to be used for the subsequent modernization of the space station’s capabilities.
China launched the manned spacecraft “Shenzhou-23” on May 24. The mission is notable for including an experiment involving a year-long stay in orbit. Previous manned missions to “Tiangong” lasted about six months.
