New Delhi, July 19 /Xinhua/ — At least 11 people have died and seven more are missing as a result of heavy rains that caused floods and landslides in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir. Local media reported this on Sunday.
Floods and landslides have struck the border areas of Punch and Rajouri, located southwest of the city of Srinagar.
According to local officials, the rain that lasted throughout the night forced hundreds of residents to relocate to safer places, as floodwaters in the morning inundated low-lying areas.
Dozens of vehicles were swept away or sank after the rivers overflowed, causing extensive damage.
The situation prompted the authorities to launch an interagency rescue operation to search for missing persons and relocate trapped people to safer locations amid continuous rains and road damage.
According to the forecast, rains will continue in the India-controlled part of Kashmir until July 23. –0–
