At Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, a methodological seminar was held dedicated to the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in educational and administrative activities. The event became a logical continuation of the university’s systematic work on integrating AI technologies into the educational environment — work that has already brought recognition to the Polytechnic, but, as emphasized by the university, does not give the right to stop at what has been achieved.
At the opening of the seminar, Vice-Rector for Educational Activities Lyudmila Pankova emphasized that the introduction of artificial intelligence at the university should solve a practical task — freeing teachers from routine processes so that they can devote more time to live interaction with students, mentoring, developing individual achievements, and creative work. “We must use AI to genuinely improve the quality of education,” she noted. “If technologies help reduce the time spent preparing reports, checking standard assignments, and administrative procedures, we will be able to return to the teacher their primary role — to be a mentor and an inspirer.” At the same time, she said, the most difficult part is not implementing individual solutions, but building an ecosystem that will work for all departments and be constantly updated. This is the serious work ahead for Polytech.
Vice-Rector for Research Yuri Fomin commented on the recent results of the Alliance ranking in the field of artificial intelligence. He noted that SPbPU significantly improved its positions: the university entered group B+ and took third place among universities in Saint Petersburg. However, according to him, the ranking is not an end in itself, but merely an indicator. The main thing is not to lose momentum and to critically reassess those processes that are not yet automated.
We understand that leadership today is tomorrow’s necessity to catch up if we do not constantly improve our approaches,” added Yuri Fomin.
The seminar presented the results of the participation of SPbPU representatives in two nationwide events dedicated to artificial intelligence.
Director of the Center for Open Education Svetlana Kalmykova and head of the project office “Digital Departments” Nadezhda Tsvetkova spoke about the work of the educational workshop for university management teams “Artificial Intelligence Tools in University Management: Strategy and Tactics.” The SPbPU team not only got acquainted with the experience of colleagues but also demonstrated their own developments. Among the presented practices, particular interest was aroused by approaches to monitoring the activities of structural units using electronic document management and building knowledge maps for adapting educational trajectories.
During the presentation, the speakers demonstrated the results of the analysis of the current situation with AI implementation at SPbPU and proposed a roadmap for accomplishing the university’s tasks. Following the discussion, it was suggested to create a specialized laboratory that will handle the collection, documentation, and dissemination of successful practices within the university. This will not only preserve the best solutions but also scale them to other departments, ensuring a unified quality standard for AI technology implementation.
Associate Professor Elena Mikhaylova of the Institute of Computer Science and Communication Technologies and leading specialist of the Center for Competence Assessment and Development Antonina Andreeva spoke about the III All-Russian Forum “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education.”
Particular interest was aroused by the participation of SPbPU representatives in the work of the track “Unified Basic Educational Module AI Literacy.” Elena Mikhaylova and Antonina Andreeva joined the federal working group for designing this course. It was noted that SPbPU’s educational programs already implement artificial intelligence modules that take into account the specifics of different polygroups, making them more relevant and adapted to the real tasks of engineering students. As a result of active discussions, it was proposed to describe Polytech’s accumulated experience and present it to the federal working group for possible replication.
Although Polytech already holds leading positions in integrating AI technologies into the educational environment today, the university realizes that there are still a huge number of areas for growth and scaling. The main task today is not just to implement AI, but to create a sustainable system that will constantly adapt to new challenges.
Polytech intends to continue strengthening its position in the field of artificial intelligence, focusing on systematic approach, critical self-analysis, and constant updating of methods. According to the seminar participants, this is what distinguishes a true leader from someone who simply ended up at the top by chance.
