On July 1, 2026, it was the 20th anniversary of the full opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Before its opening, almost all access to and from the Xizang Autonomous Region depended on roads. The route was long, and the climate was variable, which greatly hindered the transportation of goods and the movement of people. Chinese engineering teams overcame three global challenges: stabilizing the permafrost, working in conditions of thin air, and preserving the fragile ecosystem. On July 1, 2006, the railway was put into operation. This allowed Xizang to better integrate into the unified national market, which significantly supported reducing the gap between regions and promoting coordinated national development.
After the opening of this railway line, the costs and losses in the transportation of mass cargo significantly decreased. Over 20 years, its capacity steadily grew, and as of April 2026, the total volume of freight transportation in and out of Siztsan exceeded 100 million tons. Low cost, large volume of transportation, and stable timely delivery opened access to the rich resources of this highland: large energy equipment began to be delivered to the region without obstacles, and environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar and hydroelectric power started to actively develop.
Thanks to this railway, the cultural and tourism sector is also actively developing. In 2005, the number of tourists visiting Xichang was less than 1.8 million, and by 2025 this figure reached 70 million. The cultural and tourism industry has become an important pillar industry of Xichang, opening new employment opportunities and increasing local incomes for residents. In 2005, Xichang’s GDP was only 25.121 billion yuan, and by 2025 it had already exceeded 300 billion yuan.
Even deeper changes occurred in the lives of the population. In 2005, the per capita disposable income of farmers and herders in Xizang was only 2,078 yuan, but by 2025 it exceeded 23,100 yuan, increasing more than tenfold. The railway significantly reduced travel expenses for medical treatment and education, completely transforming the living conditions of the plateau residents. Over 20 years, the passenger flow on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway exceeded 41 million people.
Moreover, in 2025, the volume of freight transportation to and from Sizze reached 8.313 million tons, whereas in 2006 this figure was only 361 thousand tons. Thanks to this railway, Sizze Autonomous Region has become deeply integrated into the national production chain.
Over 20 years, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has proven one truth: China’s strength lies not only in its ability to build the most complex railways but also in its capacity to provide the most hard-to-reach regions the opportunity to keep pace with nationwide development.
