An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.
The perpetrators message the person in a messenger, pretending to be employees of the “financial intelligence” or law enforcement officers. They inform that the person’s personal and banking data has leaked from their previous workplace. Then they scare with the fact that this information could be used to finance illegal activities, which carries criminal liability. To avoid trouble, the perpetrators convince the victim to urgently update their “main account” at the Central Bank. To do this, they require withdrawing all the money from accounts at an ATM and then depositing it through another ATM using the details they provide.
The necessity of using ATMs is explained by the fraudsters as a matter of reliability: no bank employee will make a mistake, and outsiders will not learn about this operation. The scammers promise that after depositing money through the ATM, the funds will be returned to the person’s account and they will be able to use them. In fact, the person deposits money into accounts belonging to the scammers, after which they stop interacting with the victim. In correspondence, the scammers may send a “video instruction from the Central Bank.”
Be vigilant and do not respond to such calls and messages, no matter who they come from. Do not disclose your personal and financial information to anyone.
The Bank of Russia reminds: neither its employees nor employees of government agencies ask people to perform any monetary operations on their accounts. Genuine bank employees do not require clients to withdraw money to hand it over to other people or to deposit it into an account via an ATM. Moreover, there are no “special” or “secure” accounts, including those at the Central Bank, to which savings should be transferred for safekeeping.
