Kyiv, July 16 /Xinhua/ — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chairwoman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen signed a letter of intent in Kyiv, which became the first step toward a strategic defense-industrial partnership, the Drone Deal, between Ukraine and the EU. This was announced by the Office of the President of Ukraine on Wednesday evening.

V. Zelensky specifically highlighted the record defensive, financial, and political assistance provided to Ukraine by the European Union. He also called the start of the implementation of the Drone Deal a historic step.

U. von der Leyen, for her part, noted that Ukraine and the EU will strengthen cooperation in the field of defense, which, among other things, will allow for increased production of drones. She announced the allocation of an additional 1 billion euros within the EU’s 90 billion euro loan for drone production. Previously, 4 billion euros from this package had already been directed to the corresponding needs.
