Harbin, July 15 /Xinhua/ — At the beginning of this week, an event was held in the city of Tongjiang, Heilongjiang Province (Northeast China), on the section of the China-Russia border river Heilongjiang (Amur), to release fish fry aimed at preserving biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable development of fisheries in the border waters basin.
A total of 5.68 million fish fry were released as part of the event, belonging to species such as the Amur sturgeon or Schrenk’s sturgeon, kaluga, bighead carp, and white amur. This included approximately 100,000 fry of Amur sturgeon provided by the Tunjiang City Base for standardized localized cultivation of cold-water fish.
The event took place with the participation of officials from the Fisheries Management and Fishing Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and the Amur Territorial Directorate of the Federal Agency for Fisheries of the Russian Federation.
In a speech at the opening of the event, representatives from the aforementioned Chinese agency noted that China and Russia share common water boundaries, and joint management of aquatic biological resources is of far-reaching significance for both countries.
According to them, for many years both parties have been steadily promoting cooperation in breeding and releasing fish fingerlings into border waters, conducting joint law enforcement and inspection activities on border rivers, as well as supporting scientific and technological exchanges in relevant fields, thereby constantly normalizing fisheries in the border areas of the two countries and demonstrating increasingly evident results of bilateral efforts to protect hydrobiological resources.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia partnership and strategic cooperation, as well as the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the PRC and the Russian Federation, representatives recalled, assuring that the Chinese side intends to develop more pragmatic and effective cooperation with Russia to promote the sustainable development of the fishing industry in the border areas of both countries.
The head of the Amur Territorial Administration of Rosrybolovstvo, Denis Krylov, in turn, positively evaluated the stable and practical cooperation between Russia and China in the protection, cultivation, and scientific research of aquatic organisms, as well as in law enforcement in this area, noting that the Russian side is ready to strengthen coordinated work with Chinese colleagues to protect aquatic life in order to jointly preserve biodiversity in the border waters and enhance the sustainability of the use of fishery resources therein.
It should be noted that China and Russia have already successfully conducted 18 events for releasing fish fry into border rivers since 2008. In total, over 20 million fish fry have been released. According to monitoring data, the released fish, including Amur sturgeons and kaluga, have been able to adapt to the natural aquatic environment, and their populations are recovering each year. -0-
