An important component of the educational process at SPbGASU is constant interaction with employers. Students undergo internships in leading organizations of specialized industries, complete course and final qualification works based on materials from partner enterprises, and certain subjects are taught by practicing specialists with experience in implementing large infrastructure projects.
A vivid example of this approach was the introductory internship of students from the Faculty of Engineering Ecology and Urban Management (FIE&UM) directions 20.03.02 “Environmental Management and Water Use” at the construction site of the residential complex “Astra-Continental”, implemented by the partner of SPbGASU — the company Setl Group. The excursion allowed future specialists to see how modern environmental requirements and engineering solutions are applied at a large construction site.
The internship program was designed to familiarize students with the professional activities of an environmental engineer. At the construction headquarters, the holding company’s specialists gave a lecture-presentation dedicated to the environmental control system at the company’s facilities, the current regulatory requirements, and the mechanisms for their implementation in daily work.
Then the participants visited the construction site, where under the guidance of specialists they conducted monitoring of the site’s condition, assessed the implementation of environmental protection measures, familiarized themselves with the dust control system, the organization of construction waste management, and other aspects of environmental support for construction.
The tour was conducted by the head of the SES and ecology department of Setl Group Olga Fyodorova and chief environmental engineer Tatyana Serkova. They told the students about the real challenges faced daily by environmental support specialists in construction, and also shared practical experience of interaction with designers, builders, and supervisory authorities.
The outcome of the practice was the assessment of the object according to professional criteria and the discussion of the results together with the company’s experts.
The impressions gained confirmed the value of this type of training. The student participant in the internship is a first-year student. Ksenia Tesakova she noted that visiting the construction site allowed her to see how the principles of environmental safety are implemented in real work, as well as to be convinced that responsible construction is impossible without competent engineering support. According to her, it is precisely such practical sessions that help understand the prospects for professional development and motivate working in the field of “green” construction.
Her classmate Kseniya Kiseleva she emphasized that the tour changed her perception of the role of an environmental engineer. She noted that modern construction companies view environmental standards not as a formal requirement, but as an important part of the effective organization of the construction process and sustainable development of territories.
Practice-oriented training is one of the key advantages of SPbGASU’s educational programs. This training format allows students to acquire not only fundamental knowledge but also practical skills that are in demand in the labor market. Even today, prospective students have the opportunity to see their profession in action and take the first step toward creating a safe, comfortable, and sustainable urban environment.
