In June 2026, the number of deaths and injuries among the civilian population of Ukraine rose again, reaching its highest level since April 2022. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, at least 293 civilians were killed during the month, and another 1,990 were injured.
The report notes that after a sharp increase in the number of casualties in May, the situation continued to worsen. Compared to the previous month, the number of dead and injured increased by another 10 percent, and compared to June of last year – by 37 percent.
In the first six months of 2026 alone, 1,396 civilians died on the territory of Ukraine, and another 7,978 were injured. This is 37 percent more than in the same period of 2025, and more than double the figures for the first half of 2024.
The main cause of civilian casualties in June was once again strikes by long-range weapons – missiles and drones. They accounted for 45 percent of all the dead and injured: 126 people were killed, 907 wounded. Most of these attacks occurred far from the front line – in large cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro.
At the same time, the Monitoring Mission recorded a record number of casualties since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion as a result of small-range drone attacks in frontline areas. In June, such strikes led to the deaths of 89 civilians and injuries to another 588 people.
Air bombings, artillery shelling, strikes from multiple rocket launch systems, as well as explosions of mines and other munitions left after combat operations continued to claim lives.
The vast majority of victims in June were recorded in territory controlled by the Ukrainian government. Civilians were affected in 13 regions of the country and Kyiv. The highest number of dead and wounded was registered in Zaporizhzhia region (23 dead and 229 wounded), Kherson region (18 dead and 236 wounded), Dnipropetrovsk region (25 dead and 77 wounded), as well as in Kyiv (11 dead and 112 wounded).
The report also states that in June, the Russian armed forces continued to strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. At the same time, the Monitoring Mission noted a sharp increase in attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on facilities for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in occupied Crimea. At least 12 such strikes led to emergency or planned power outages.
