The delegation from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University visited universities in Vietnam. The visit took place within the framework of the Year of Russian-Vietnamese Cooperation in Science and Education. One of the key outcomes was the agreement to establish and develop a network scientific and educational laboratory for intelligent control systems. It is expected that the laboratory will begin work in the near future and become a center for implementing educational programs, research, and new joint projects.
The delegation from Polytech included representatives from the Graduate School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management of the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at SPbPU — Associate Professor Vyacheslav Potekhin and Assistant Egor Kuklin. The visit combined two areas of Polytech’s work: development of a long-term partnership with Binh Duong University (BDU) and the formation of a new cooperation trajectory with Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH).
BZU is one of SPbPU’s key partners in Vietnam. Cooperation began in 2006 and has evolved from educational programs and personnel training to the establishment of joint scientific and educational centers and laboratories. With the participation of the Polytechnic, a Russian-Vietnamese center was created at BZU, the laboratories “Microprocessor Technology” and “Intelligent Industrial Control Systems” were opened, and teaching and scientific work involving SPbPU staff was carried out. Kao Viet Hieu, the rector of BZU, is an Honorary Professor at SPbPU.
The new visit continued this line with an emphasis on automation, modern management technologies, and AI in industry. Representatives of SPbPU held negotiations with the management and specialists of BZU, agreed on the curriculum of a joint educational program in automation, discussed scientific research, academic mobility, and the participation of polytechnic students in BZU’s educational programs.
One of the main practical outcomes was the agreement to create and develop a networked scientific and educational laboratory of intelligent control systems. It is expected that the laboratory will begin operation in the near future and become a center for implementing educational programs, research, and new joint projects of SPbPU and BZU. The Vietnamese side is also interested in involving Polytechnic scientists in teaching, developing educational programs, and academic consulting.
It is important for us that cooperation with Binh Duong University develops not as a set of separate events, but as consistent engineering work. Coordination of curricula, creation of a network laboratory, involvement of teachers and researchers in teaching at BDU programs allow translating international partnership into specific educational and scientific results,
The second part of the visit was connected with Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH). This partnership is actively developing in 2026 with the participation of HUTECH staff member and graduate of SPbPU, Nguyen Ngoc Tan, who defended his PhD thesis at the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications of the Polytechnic University. Currently, Dr. Tan is acting as the coordinator of the emerging collaboration between SPbPU and HUTECH.
Participants of the meeting at HUTECH discussed the topic of a joint project for submitting an application for a grant from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, prospects for educational cooperation, and further institutionalization of the partnership. The first practical step will be a series of regular online seminars for teachers and students of the HUTECH Faculty of Information Technology on digital technologies, AI, intelligent systems, and modern approaches to managing complex technical objects, scheduled for the upcoming academic year. The universities also agreed to work out directions for joint research and publications and to soon proceed to conclude a comprehensive partnership agreement.
Vietnam remains one of the significant directions of international cooperation for Polytech. Among our partners are nine leading universities and research institutes of the country; the history of our interaction spans more than half a century, and during this time Polytech has trained more than 800 specialists in engineering and economic fields for Vietnam. It is especially valuable that our graduates begin to initiate, support, and develop scientific and educational ties. The coordinating role of Doctor Tan in the development of a new cooperation line with HUTECH is a very demonstrative example of working with foreign graduates of Polytech, which is systematically conducted by the international departments, emphasized Dmitry Arseniev, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of SPbPU.
The visit to Vietnam showed that Polytech’s cooperation with the universities of this country is entering a new stage. In a year when Russia and Vietnam are paying special attention to interaction in the fields of science and education, such projects become a practical contribution of the universities to the development of bilateral relations.
