Birds are an important part of natural ecosystems. China has long attached great importance to bird protection. On July 2, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China held a press conference where relevant information was presented.
In recent years, China has consistently introduced a number of active measures for protection and management, which have yielded significant results: populations of many bird species at risk of extinction have stabilized and are showing growth, and the number and diversity of birds in various regions have noticeably increased.
As reported by Wang Weisheng, head of the Department of Wildlife Flora and Fauna Protection at the State Administration of Forestry and Grassland, China continuously strengthens its legislative framework in this field in order to improve bird protection.
The Law on the Protection of Wild Animals was revised and adopted, and in 2021 and 2023 the “List of Particularly Valuable Wild Animals of China under State Protection” and the “List of Terrestrial Wild Animals of Important Ecological, Scientific, and Social Significance” were updated and published. As a result, the number of bird species under state protection was expanded to 394, and the number of bird species categorized as “having important ecological, scientific, and social significance” increased to 1028. Thus, 98.4% of bird species are covered by legal protection.
In order to create a favorable ecological environment for the migration, breeding, and wintering of birds, 1,140 important habitats along the migration routes of migratory birds have been identified in China. Among them, 821 key habitats have been additionally selected for comprehensive conservation and restoration efforts, as well as the improvement of the monitoring and protection network.
In addition, 14 bird species are included in the urgent protection program under the 14th five-year plan, and another 21 species have been added to the urgent protection program under the 15th five-year plan.
