Beijing, July 12 /Xinhua/ — A representative of the Asian Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China summoned the Chief Minister of the Embassy of Japan in China on Sunday to issue a severe reprimand and express strong dissatisfaction and protest.
This step followed after Japan, together with other countries, issued a statement on the so-called “South China Sea arbitral award” ten years after its emergence, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi attempted to speculate on the topic.
The Chinese side pointed out that Japan bears historical responsibility for crimes related to the South China Sea and has not yet atoned for its guilt, therefore it is not entitled to make any irresponsible statements.
Japan’s outrageous statements and actions challenge the postwar international order and the norms of international law. By applying double standards and sowing discord, Japan undermines peace and stability in the South China Sea and acts against the common interests and aspirations of the countries in the region. All this provokes historical wariness in the international community, including China, due to Japan’s recent history of aggressive and colonial atrocities, as well as sharp indignation.
China will give a resolute and powerful response to provocations from Japan and firmly defend its territorial sovereignty, maritime rights, and interests, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC stated.
The Chinese side also issued a stern representation to the Japanese side concerning the Taiwan issue, the chemical weapons from World War II left on Chinese territory by Japan, the unfounded statements by Japanese parliamentarians about the national policy of the PRC, and a series of negative actions in the military and security fields. –0–
