Beijing, July 12 /Xinhua/ — Chinese authorities have stepped up efforts to combat floods and mitigate the effects of natural disasters as Typhoon Bavi continued to batter many parts of the country on Sunday.
Typhoon “Bavi,” the ninth of the year, made landfall on the coast of Zhejiang Province /Eastern China/ late Saturday evening, after which it continued moving inland within the country. It is expected to move northwestward, gradually weakening.
From Sunday to Tuesday, rains ranging from heavy to torrential will occur over a vast area of China, including the provinces of Anhui, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang, as well as some parts of the provinces Liaoning and Jilin.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Water Resources of the PRC raised the flood warning level to “yellow,” the third-highest in the four-tier weather alert system, stating that heavy rainfall could cause floods on some rivers, mountain torrents, and urban area flooding in zones of heavy rain.
The central authorities sent 70,000 units of material resources from the central disaster relief fund to Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, as well as to the centrally administered city of Tianjin, to support the efforts of local authorities in ensuring the safe evacuation, resettlement, and sheltering of residents affected by the disaster, the Ministry of Emergency Management /MEM/ of the PRC reported.
The specified batch of material resources, which includes folding beds, summer blankets, and family sets of essential items, was jointly allocated by the Office of the State Committee for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation, and Relief, the Ministry of Emergency Management, and the National Food and Material Reserves Administration of China. -0-
