Taipei, July 11 /Xinhua/ — According to the latest statistics released on Friday, the total population of Taiwan has been declining for the 30th consecutive month, indicating growing demographic problems caused by declining birth rates and the rapid aging of the island’s population.
According to the island’s Department of Internal Affairs, as of the end of June 2026, the population of Taiwan was 23.24 million people, which is 103,176 fewer than a year earlier and 9,076 fewer than at the end of May of the current year.
Statistical data also indicate a continuing decline in birth rates in Taiwan. In the first six months of this year, 46,344 children were born on the island, which is 9,031 fewer babies than in the same period last year.
Last year, Taiwan officially became a “super-aged society,” where people aged 65 and older make up 20 percent of the total population. As of the end of June, the number of residents aged 65 and older reached 4.76 million, accounting for 20.49 percent of the island’s total population.
According to statistical data, among the cities and counties of Taiwan, the highest proportion of elderly people aged 65 and over is observed in the city of Taipei – 24.61%, while the lowest is in Hsinchu County – 15.38%.
