With the arrival of spring and above-zero temperatures at the Moscow Zoo, under the jurisdiction of the capitalDepartment of Culture, animals that spent the winter in the enclosed pavilion went out for a walk. To see them, it is sufficient to purchase tickets through the service“Mosbilet”.

One of the first birds was released into the street aviary on the new territory. The feathered creatures are released in the morning and daytime, when the sun warms the ground up to plus 5–10 degrees. Visitors can observe cranes, black storks, crowned cranes, saddle-billed storks, black-necked cranes, and marabou.

“Taking warm-loving animals outside is always an important stage, marking the arrival of true spring in the zoo. We try to make this transfer as comfortable as possible, taking into account the individual characteristics of each species. It is especially touching to observe the young inhabitants. For example, little capybaras born in autumn went out for a walk for the first time and curiously got acquainted with the snow. And the male plains gorilla Visuri, like a true leader, was the first to take the family out for exercise, setting an example even for the youngest Kvito.”We invite Muscovites and guests of the capital to take a walk around the zoo grounds and observe the life of our inhabitants in the outdoor enclosures. In addition, many of our wards can be followed online on the website zoo.mos.ru,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.

At the end of March, curly and pink pelicans, as well as cormorants, moved to the street pond in the new territory. They spent the cold season in the “Birds and Butterflies” pavilion.

Among the mammals in the outdoor area are lowland gorillas. Visitors will see the male Vizuri and the female Kiru, as well as the little one Kwito. Now the zoologists have started adding adult food to his diet: greens, browse, fresh vegetables, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.

On the old territory, you can observe the largest rodents in the world, inhabiting South America — the capybara family. These are aquatic pigs for whom water bodies are important. In warm weather, they bathe in the outdoor pond. The first to go out is little Simka, who was born last autumn. Following her, her sister Verda appears on the outdoor territory.

Giant anteaters Diego and Bella, who live next door to the capybaras, are also taken for walks.

Baby capybaras have appeared in the Moscow Zoo

In April and May, with the onset of stable warm weather outside, other zoo inhabitants such as orangutans, ring-tailed lemurs, flamingos, dik-diks, meerkats, giraffes, honey badgers, Cape crows, and parrots began to gradually go outside as well.

The event program at the Moscow Zoo contributes to the implementation of the goals and objectives of the national project in Moscow“Family”. More about the national project of Russia and the contribution of the capital can be found atspecial page.

Moscow Zoo today is a dynamically developing space where scientific work is conducted, international conferences are held, educational programs are implemented, and a unique atmosphere is created daily for residents and visitors of the capital to get acquainted with the amazing world of wildlife.

At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species represented — 1,253 species. By 2026, the number had exceeded 1,280. This outstanding result was made possible thanks to the many years of work by a team of zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other staff members.
