Shanghai, July 10 /Xinhua/ — According to a report published on Friday, Shanghai ranked second among leading international shipping centers. Surpassing London, Shanghai took second place in the 2026 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index after Singapore. This is the city’s highest ranking ever since the index was introduced in 2014.
The head of the Baltic Exchange’s Asian region noted that Shanghai’s success goes far beyond simple freight volumes. At its core is a mature and diverse maritime ecosystem that unites shipping companies, financial institutions, insurers, legal services, ship brokers, shipyards, and technology providers.
Continuous investments in digital innovations, the development of green ports, and maritime services have further strengthened the city’s global competitiveness, added the said official.
Container throughput at the Port of Shanghai exceeded 55.06 million standard containers /TEU/ in 2025, setting a new record.
This year’s index also highlighted China’s expanding presence in the global shipping industry. Currently, the country is home to seven shipping centers ranked among the world’s top twenty.
The Xinhu-Baltic International Shipping Centers Development Index was developed jointly by the China Economic Information Service at the Xinhua News Agency and the Baltic Exchange. It has been published annually since 2014. At present, it has become one of the most influential benchmarks for assessing the development of the largest shipping centers around the world.
