On July 8, the exhibition “Echoes from the Banks of the Volga — an exhibition of masterpieces of Russian oil painting and graphics over a century” opened at the Shenyang Art Museum.
The exhibition was organized by the Department of Culture, Tourism, Radio, and Television of Shenyang City, and is managed by the Shenyang Public Cultural Services Center (Shenyang City Culture and Performing Arts Center). Holding this large-scale exhibition in Shenyang promotes the establishment of interregional and intercultural connections in the field of art, as well as further enriches the offerings in the city’s public culture sector and meets the high and diverse spiritual and cultural needs of the population.
On the banks of the Volga, cultural traditions have been formed for millennia, giving rise to Russian painting, which has absorbed a rich heritage, expressive style, and virtuoso skill. Its classic canon — a unique system of realistic creativity and a heartfelt humanistic pathos — has firmly entered the world treasury of art. Over the years, it does not fade but, on the contrary, gains new strength.
The exhibition features about one hundred of the best works of Russian painting and graphics from the 19th to the 20th centuries, covering a century-long history of Russian painting development. The exposition is built on a strict professional academic concept, characterized by a clear narrative line and consistency. Among the presented works are classic masterpieces by Isaac Levitan, the “poet of Russian nature,” which vividly demonstrate the origins of the Peredvizhniki art, their deep connection with the era, and the life-like authenticity and truthfulness of the images. The exposition also extensively presents works by masters such as Andrey Mylnikov, who, relying on traditions, boldly introduced innovative elements into their art.
The themes of the works are exceptionally diverse and rich: majestic historical canvases, serene beauties of fields and forests, lively scenes of urban everyday life, poignant portraits — all coexist and mutually complement each other. The works of Russian artists are distinguished by meticulous craftsmanship in the depiction, a special spiritual meaning, and distinctive features of national aesthetics.
