Beijing, July 10 /Xinhua/ — The National Meteorological Center (NMC) of China on Friday extended the orange-level alert due to Typhoon Bavi, the ninth this year, which is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, the center of Typhoon Bavi was located approximately 1,020 km southeast of the junction of the borders between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces in eastern China, with maximum wind speeds near its center reaching 42 meters per second, according to a statement from the National Meteorological Center.
According to forecasts, ‘Bavi’ will move in a northwest direction at a speed of 15-20 km/h and will make landfall in the coastal area between the city of Xiapu /Fujian Province/ and the city of Wenling /Zhejiang Province/ on Saturday evening. After making landfall, it will continue moving northwest, gradually weakening.
Storm winds are expected in the waters east of Taiwan, most of the East China Sea, and the waters near Diaoyu Island, as well as along the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces and the island of Taiwan, from 2:00 p.m. Friday to 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
Heavy rains, up to torrential downpours, will hit the southeast of Zhejiang Province, the northeast of Fujian Province, and the island of Taiwan, with some areas of Taiwan expecting intense showers with precipitation amounts of 250-800 mm. Residents of these regions are advised to avoid visiting mountainous areas, river valleys, and other places where there is a risk of geological disasters.
