At NSU, the Development of Russian-Chinese Cooperation in Life Sciences Was Discussed

At Novosibirsk State University, as part of the 15th International Multiconference “Bioinformatics of Regulation and Genome Structure / Systems Biology” BGRS/SB-2026, a working meeting “Russian-Chinese cooperation in life sciences: experiment, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence” is taking place.

The event is dedicated to the formation of a unified scientific and educational space between Russia and China in the fields of life sciences, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence, relying on the institutes of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center and Novosibirsk State University.

The program included reports by Russian and Chinese scientists on the prospects for joint research, discussions of new scientific and educational initiatives, and a poster session with results of projects already implemented.

The organizers were the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, NSU, the Federal Research Center “Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the SB RAS”, the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine, and the Federal Research Center “G. K. Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the SB RAS”.

Speaking at the opening, one of the event’s co-chairs, a professor from Zhejiang University Ming Chen emphasized that Russian-Chinese cooperation in this area has a history of more than 20 years, including conferences, joint lectures, exchange of scientists, and joint projects.

Today’s meeting elevates our longstanding academic friendship to a new level. Standardized and sustainable frameworks for Sino-Russian cooperation in the fields of life sciences, bioinformatics, big data, and artificial intelligence are being established., — he noted.

According to Ming Chen, the Chinese delegation was formed as an interdisciplinary group of leading scientists, education specialists, and young researchers.

The meeting presents four key areas: interactive bioinformatics based on artificial intelligence, agricultural sciences and intelligent breeding, biomedical bioinformatics, and innovations in bioinformatics education.

All our research pursues a single goal — to use big data and artificial intelligence to decipher biological mechanisms and address challenges in food security, personalized medicine, and healthy aging, — emphasized the professor.

Special attention was paid to the complementarity of the scientific potentials of the two countries. Ming Chen noted that the Novosibirsk scientific center holds leading positions in fundamental genetics, systems biology, and mathematical modeling, while Chinese research institutions have advantages in accumulating large datasets, developing artificial intelligence algorithms, biomedicine, and modern agricultural biotechnology.

By combining our strengths, we can effectively address global challenges in food security, healthy aging, and precision medicine together, — he said.

On the eve of the meeting, the Russian side proposed seven key topics for discussion, formulated by academician Nikolai Kolchanov together with the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the leadership of Novosibirsk State University. In response, the Chinese delegation presented six comprehensive mutually beneficial initiatives, which will be discussed in detail at two round tables.

Rector of NSU Dmitry Pyshny in his speech reminded that 15 years ago, based on Heilongjiang University and NSU, the first Russian-Chinese institute was established. Today, 47 joint educational institutions operate between Russian and Chinese universities, three of which were created by NSU, and at Novosibirsk State University, 21 joint programs are being implemented on their basis.

Science in China is developing very rapidly, it is at a high level, and its scale allows for joint projects to be implemented in virtually any field, — he said.

Kochetov noted that the competencies of Russian scientists in bioinformatics, mathematics, and mathematical biology attract interest from Chinese colleagues, and the mutual interest “significantly increases the efficiency of cooperation.” The participants also want the working meeting at NSU to be seen as a platform where long-term Russian-Chinese ties in the life sciences, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence will develop into discussions of specific joint programs and projects.
