Moscow has expanded its unique contactless payment ecosystem by launching a biometric payment service on the fourth line of the ground metro (MCD-4). The project confirms the capital’s status as a global leader in the number of types of public transport supporting facial recognition technologies.
The innovative service has been deployed at 35 MCD-4 stations, where 122 turnstiles have been equipped with digital equipment (one for entry and one for exit in each vestibule). The system architecture is completely seamless: for contactless access, the passenger only needs to look into the camera on the turnstile after quick registration in the “Moscow Metro” app. At stations without turnstiles, a trip can be started and ended simply by tapping a linked bank card on the validator.
The implementation of biometrics is the flagship element of the capital’s Smart City strategy. Today, the Face Pay technology operates at all metro stations and the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), on Aeroexpress trains, on regular river electric vessels, and on the First Diameter. The database of active users of the service has already reached 900,000 people, making over 200,000 trips each working day.
“As per the task given by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, by the end of July the payment tool will appear on MCD-2, and by the end of the year — on MCD-3. We are creating the most advanced, fastest, and most convenient digital environment for passengers in the world,” noted Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
