“NOVATEK” has launched the northernmost greenhouse gas monitoring station as part of the national network of carbon polygons
Moscow, September 18, 2026. PJSC NOVATEK (hereinafter referred to as “NOVATEK” and/or the “Company”) in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Arctic Research Center, and Tyumen State University has launched the northernmost greenhouse gas monitoring station as part of the national network of carbon polygons. The station is located in the Nadym District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, on the licensed site of the subsidiary LLC “NOVATEK-YURKHAROVNEFTEGAZ.”
The new station, located in the southern tundra zone, will complement the existing carbon site “Seven Larches” in the forest-tundra zone of the region. Data obtained from the station will improve the accuracy of climate change forecasting in the Arctic.
The key feature of the station is its focus on permafrost. The station is equipped with modern, internationally-standard measurement equipment, as well as a drilled thermometric borehole. This will allow for assessing the ability of tundra ecosystems to absorb carbon.
“For NOVATEK, it is strategically important to understand the extent and dynamics of climate changes in the Arctic, where the Company’s resource base is located,” noted Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of the Management Board of NOVATEK. “Expanding the network of carbon polygons and conducting climate research in the Arctic will improve the justification of the engineering and technical solutions we apply.”
The project became an example of effective collaboration between science, business, and government for studying the climate and sustainable development of the Arctic.
PJSC NOVATEK is one of the largest independent natural gas producers in Russia. In 2017, the Company entered the international LNG market following the successful launch of the Yamal LNG project. Established in 1994, the Company is engaged in the exploration, production, processing, and sale of gas and liquid hydrocarbons. The fields and licensed areas of NOVATEK’s subsidiaries and affiliates are primarily located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the world’s largest natural gas production region, accounting for about 80% of Russia’s gas production and approximately 15% of the world’s gas output. NOVATEK is a public joint-stock company established in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.
