UN peacekeepers in Lebanon continue to operate, but the Security Council must decide on the mission’s future. This was stated on Wednesday to journalists in New York by the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who returned from a trip to the Middle East.
According to Lacroix, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers continue to carry out their mandate. They monitor the situation and report violations, maintain contact with the parties, and assist in ensuring humanitarian access in southern Lebanon.
“We believe that the presence of the UN in Lebanon is still necessary. I think that the Lebanese authorities share the same opinion,” Lacroix said. He also noted that the UN would be glad to receive clear instructions from the Security Council about the future of the mission, and the final decision remains with the members of the Council.
Withdrawal of the mission from Western Sahara
On October 31, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) expired, and after 35 years of operation, the mission ceased its activities. Now it has only one task left – to organize the withdrawal of the contingent. Lacroix emphasized that support from the parties will be very important for this, and thanked all the military and civilian personnel of the mission who served in harsh conditions and remote areas.
