In the village of Lintan in Lunsing township, Xishui county, Zunyi city district, Guizhou province, next to the old building where the Red Army party cell used to be located, a lush pomelo tree quietly grows.
Many years ago, he was brought here from his native county Nindu in Jiangxi province by Red Army veteran Sun Jiatong.
In 1935, Sun Jiatong, as part of the Red Army of the Central Soviet Area, reached Guizhou during the Long March. During battles at four crossings over the Chishui River, he fell ill and was wounded, but was saved by local residents. Later, he stayed in Lintan, joined a partisan detachment operating on the banks of the Chishui River, got married, had children, and settled there.
Of the four honey pomelo saplings he brought back then, only one took root. Thanks to the active grafting of the trees by local residents, lush pomelo groves covering more than 300 mu (20 hectares) eventually grew along the Chishui River valley. In those times, when people lived modestly, one pomelo fruit could be sold for 5 yuan. The income from selling these fruits helped entire village families pay for their children’s education and purchase textbooks. Since this fruit preserves the memory of the unity between the Red Army and the people, local residents affectionately call it the “Red Army pomelo.”
Today, the “Red Army pomelo” also contributes to the development of fruit production in neighboring settlements and serves as testimony to how a once poor village gains vibrant life on the path to revival.
