According to the management of the China State Railway Corporation in Urumqi, as of October 23, more than 15,000 freight trains on China-Europe (Central Asia) routes have passed through two railway border crossings in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Alashankou and Khorgos) since the beginning of this year. The volume of goods transported through these border crossings amounted to 30.58 million tons.
In order to create a “golden transport corridor” between Asia and Europe and to strengthen Xinjiang’s role as China’s forefront of openness to the West, the region’s railway services continue to increase the capacity of China-Europe routes. In particular, the maximum number of wagons in a train has been increased from 50 to 55, and the load capacity of a single train set – from 2,500 to 3,000 tons.
As of today, the Alashankou railway border crossing handles 130 freight train routes connecting China with 21 countries, including Germany and Poland. The Khorgos border crossing has 91 routes covering 46 cities and regions in 18 foreign countries.
