Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has reached record levels, the UN and its partners continue to provide assistance to the people of Ukraine, the head of the IAEA is concerned about the state of nuclear material previously declared by Iran, the UNHCR has allocated over 2 million dollars to strengthen measures against Ebola in Kenya.
Greenhouse gases
According to a new report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in 2025 the concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached unprecedentedly high levels, which will lead to a long-term increase in the planet’s temperature. The global average surface concentration of CO2 in 2025 was 426.8 parts per million. This is 153 percent of the pre-industrial level. The concentration of methane and nitrous oxide — the second and third most significant of the so-called long-lived greenhouse gases — also reached record levels. Greenhouse gases retain unprecedented amounts of heat in the atmosphere, leading to an increase in extreme weather events.
Attacks on Ukraine
The UN and its partners continue to assist the people of Ukraine. In September, 150 humanitarian organizations helped 326,000 people who were forced to leave their homes. However, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that ongoing attacks significantly complicate this work. Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine were again struck, resulting in damage to bridges, medical and educational facilities. The UN Refugee Agency calls on the international community to continue supporting Ukrainians.
Iran’s Nuclear Facilities
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is concerned about the status of the nuclear material previously declared by Iran. The IAEA is seeking the necessary information and access from Tehran for its inspectors, Grossi stated on Tuesday at a UN Security Council meeting. The agency continues to monitor activity at Iran’s declared nuclear facilities. Since June 2025, the IAEA has found no attempts to repair or restore facilities damaged during military strikes in 2025 and 2026. However, monitoring does not replace a full inspection, Grossi noted.
Ebola in Kenya
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has allocated over 2 million dollars to strengthen efforts against Ebola in Kenya. These funds will enable humanitarian organizations to support government initiatives, including enhancing epidemiological surveillance at border crossing points and conducting training for rapid response teams. Resources will also be directed towards ensuring Ebola preparedness along routes used by refugees and travelers. According to the latest data, nine cases of the disease have been recorded in Kenya, two of which resulted in death. An additional 134 people may have been infected; all of them have been quarantined.
