Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, Israel’s operation in Hebron in the West Bank, the killing of a medic by protesters amid an Ebola outbreak in the DRC, the completion of the UN mission in Somalia.
Report of the Commission on Ukraine
The Russian authorities “have committed crimes against humanity by striking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as well as engaging in human trafficking to recruit foreign nationals into their armed forces.” This is stated in a report presented by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine to the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. According to the experts’ statement, each year waves of attacks using hundreds of drones and missiles become increasingly frequent and intense, covering increasingly larger areas.
The situation in the West Bank
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that Israel’s operation in Hebron on the West Bank, ongoing since Friday, has already led to the forced displacement of over 2,000 Palestinians. According to him, residential houses and commercial properties are being demolished, and local residents are deprived of freedom of movement. The scale of the measures taken by Israel raises serious concerns, Türk emphasized, pointing to their unjustifiability and disproportionality. He reminded that collective punishment is a gross violation of international law.
Fighting Ebola in the DRC
The UN Senior Coordinator for Ebola Response, Julien Harnais, expressed outrage over the killing of a healthcare worker involved in combating the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is reported that on Saturday in the town of Bafwasende, Tshopo province, he was attacked by protesters. The school director, who supported Ebola control measures, was also seriously injured. Furthermore, reports indicate that a medical center was looted on Sunday. One of the healthcare workers was reportedly beaten and held against his will before being released. The UN supports the DRC authorities in investigating these incidents and enhancing the protection of medical facilities.
UN Mission in Somalia
The United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNSTMIS) will cease operations on October 31, the Organization’s press service announced today. The decision was made in accordance with Security Council resolutions and at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia. This will mark the end of over thirty years of UN mission activities in the country. UN Secretary-General António Guterres highly praised the progress achieved through the mission’s work, expressed gratitude to all who served in UNSTMIS and its predecessor missions, and honored the memory of UN personnel who died in Somalia. The UN will continue to support the country through its agencies, funds, and programs on the ground.
