On October 21, in the exhibition halls of the “Mezzanine” of the A.S. Pushkin State Museum, under the jurisdiction of the capital Department of Culture, an exhibition will open “The Belinsky Code”. It was timed to coincide with the 215th anniversary of the birth of the critic Vissarion Belinsky.

The project is organized by the A.S. Pushkin State Museum in collaboration with the V.I. Dahl State Museum of the History of Russian Literature, the Oryol United State Literary Museum of I.S. Turgenev, the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, and the publishing house “Eksmo.” The exhibition is presented within the framework of the Association of Literary Museums of the Union of Museums of Russia.

The exhibition is organized on a biographical principle: each hall corresponds to a specific stage of Belinsky’s life. This approach will allow visitors to trace how his views changed and how his literary beliefs were formed.

The first section is dedicated to the formation of Belinsky’s personality: his childhood in the provinces, difficult family circumstances, and the first years of study that forged his character and influenced the development of his social views.

The second section tells about the Moscow period in the critic’s life. Here Belinsky goes through the path from a provincial commoner and expelled student to a recognized author and participant in an intellectual circle.

The third hall is dedicated to Belinsky the critic, who, thanks to his talent and convictions, became not just a literary reviewer but the voice of a generation. His method combined philosophical depth with a demand for the truth of life. Belinsky was one of the first to proclaim Pushkin a national genius, saw Gogol as the head of a new literary school, supported Dostoevsky after the publication of “Poor Folk,” and debated with Lermontov about the fate of the generation. His critical works helped incorporate literature into the broader social discourse.

The fourth hall is dedicated to the last stage of Belinsky’s life (1845–1848) and how his ideas outlived the author, becoming part of the Russian intellectual tradition.

The exhibition will last until February 21, 2027.
