For many, the approach of the New Year and Christmas holidays is associated not only with a decorated tree, the twinkling of garlands, and pleasant fuss, but also with traditional performances. For fans of legendary stories, this winter at the Moscow Academic Musical Theatre (MAMT) named after K.S. Stanislavsky and Vl. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, under the jurisdiction of the capital Department of Culture, will show “The Nutcracker”. Tickets for the ballet are already available on the official city service “Mosbilet.”

In Yuri Posokhov’s production, a familiar plot takes on a new voice. By turning to the famous fairy tale by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, the choreographer sees not only a Christmas adventure but also a coming-of-age story — a conversation about courage, dreams, and the joyful anticipation of the future. The audience is in for a performance about the moment when childhood is still near, and ahead lies a vast and unknown world.

According to the plot, on Christmas Eve, Mr. Stahlbaum’s house is full of guests. Among them is the skillful inventor and a bit of a magician Drosselmeyer, who gives the main character Marie an unusual mechanical toy — the Nutcracker. The girl immediately becomes attached to it, although other children only laugh at its ridiculous appearance. At night, huge rodents led by the Mouse King emerge from beneath the floor in Marie’s room, and the Nutcracker, who turns out to be an enchanted prince, stands up to protect the girl. Having won the victory, they set off with Marie to a magical land. For the heroine, this journey becomes not only a fairy-tale adventure but also an important inner trial.

Set designer Polina Bakhtina conceived the performance space as a huge fold-out book. Its pages change one after another, familiar objects suddenly grow to incredible sizes, and details come to life. A home room becomes a field of a fantastic battle, then gives way to the road to the stars. Costumes, lighting, and animation complement this world where reality almost imperceptibly flows into a dream.

Movement plays a special role in the production. In Yuri Posokhov’s choreography, it conveys all the nuances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s legendary compositions, who wrote the famous ballet: festive liveliness and nighttime anxiety, mischief and mystery, childlike carefreeness and a sense of impending change. Marie’s story unfolds between sleep and wakefulness, and the transformation of the Nutcracker echoes what happens to her herself.

The first performance will take place on December 19. The duration of the play is two hours and 15 minutes with one intermission. The show will be interesting for viewers over six years old. You can find information about other show dates here.
