In Russia, it is planned to create a unified interdepartmental sports medicine system, ensuring the realization of sports potential, strengthening health, and increasing the performance of athletes participating in competitions of various levels. To address this task, by the order of the President, the Government approved the Strategy for the Development of Sports Medicine and the action plan for its implementation until 2030 and prospects until 2036.

Sports medicine in Russia has developed as an independent branch of medicine. Its importance is defined not only by the tasks of elite sports but also by the growth of mass, youth, school, university, adaptive, and corporate sports.

The main provisions of the new strategy are aimed at addressing these issues. The document sets long-term guidelines for state policy in this area and unites the efforts of federal agencies, regions, the scientific, medical, and sports communities to ensure accessible and high-quality medical support for athletes across the country.

In particular, the strategy provides for the implementation of continuous medical support for athletes from the initial stages of sports engagement to the completion of their sports careers and the establishment of a unified vertical organizational and methodological management system for sports medicine, as well as the improvement of regulatory and legal regulation. To enable early identification of health risks, in-depth diagnostics, stress testing, medical rehabilitation, and health monitoring of athletes, it is planned to modernize the necessary medical infrastructure and develop regional sports medicine centers.

The strategy also includes conducting scientific research aimed at developing, testing, and implementing new treatment methods in the field of sports medicine. This concerns predictive diagnostics, personalized monitoring, modern technologies for recovery, and support of athletes during training and competitions.

Great attention is paid to the development of human resources potential. To this end, it is proposed to update residency programs and additional professional programs in sports medicine, develop and approve training programs for specialists in adaptive sports, ensure the continuity of improving professional knowledge and skills of specialists, train them in injury prevention and support for adaptive sports athletes, and promote the profession of sports medicine doctor among students of medical educational institutions, including through internships, practical training, mentorship, and participation in events.

Also a priority is assistance to athletically gifted children, targeted support for children with health limitations, children from large families, and those who are in difficult life situations. Maximum accessibility to activities and competitions should be ensured for everyone.

Mikhail Mishustin announced the approval of the new strategy at at the meeting with the deputy prime ministers on October 13. The Head of Government emphasized that the document is primarily aimed at achieving the national goal of preserving the population, strengthening health, and improving people’s well-being, and instructed Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova to personally oversee the implementation of the strategy’s action plan, including the timelines and quality of its execution.
