For two days, intensive work was carried out involving the university leadership, institute directors, heads of research laboratories, faculty members, and industry representatives. The work was aimed not only at assessing the implementation of the development program at the university but also at thoroughly working through the planned transformational processes that will start at SPbPU in the near future.

Recall that at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University work is underway on a new structure that includes three new types of subdivisions:

  • faculties whose task is high-quality engineering training;
  • leading engineering schools where research and training are combined in a single framework aimed at technological leadership;
  • scientific-production and scientific-technological centers and a consolidated scientific-technological institute, which are meant to bring developments to technologies and products put into production.

For two days, four groups of participants in the cross-university expertise worked on the target model of SPbPU and models of new divisions, which will form the basis for the next stage of development of one of Russia’s leading polytechnic universities. Interactive formats, constant exchange of information between groups, hypothesis testing, and thorough analysis of proposals from colleagues allowed the participants to work through the issues deeply, identify potential risks, and structural gaps in the new models of university organization.

A complex task was carried out, and I am grateful to my colleagues for their creativity, deep expertise, willingness, and, most importantly, their understanding of the transformational processes that need to be undertaken at Polytech to strengthen its role in achieving our country’s technological leadership,” commented the organizer from SPbPU, head of the SPbPU Technology Leadership Office, Oleg Rozhdestvensky, on the results of the cross-university expertise.

Representatives of Russia’s high-tech industry, who have been working with St. Petersburg Polytechnic University for many years both in the implementation of R&D and in education, actively joined the implementation of cross-university expertise. These include representatives of PJSC “Gazprom”, LLC “Centrotech-Engineering”, and JSC “Power Machines”.

Konstantin Savichev, Director of the Engineering Center at JSC “Power Machines,” commented on the results of the cross-university expertise: Colleagues set themselves an ambitious task. The key during the upcoming transformation is to prevent the realization of risks that could disrupt our established communications. This is critically important for us, as industry expects quick responses from educational partners. And here, Polytech definitely deserves credit — the university is doing an excellent job with this task. The cross-university expertise allows us to look at the model of the future university from all perspectives. I am confident that thanks to today’s centralization and synergy of internal and external efforts, it will be possible to develop an effective concept that will respond not only to today’s challenges but also to those facing the university in the future.

In addition to participating in the work of the groups, the experts of the cross-university examination familiarized themselves with the material and technical base of SPbPU by visiting the supercomputing center “Polytechnic,” the scientific and technological educational space “TVEL — SPbPU,” the scientific and educational center “Gazpromneft-Polytech,” and the Scientific and Production Center.

At the conclusion of the second day, Vladimir Kislov, Director of the Project Development Directorate at MEPhI National Research Nuclear University and expert at the FSRC “Sociocenter”, concluded: The main topics of our discussion over these two days were the organizational model of the university and the economic models of its subdivisions. We will be able to evaluate their effectiveness only after several years, once the transformation is complete and final results have appeared. However, from the perspective of this historical moment, it is very pleasant to be at the Polytechnic and to discuss this tectonic shift, this phase transition. In a few years, it will be interesting to return to this process at similar expert platforms and discuss what was planned and what was implemented.

The results of the inter-university review will form the basis for specific activities and decisions that will be included in the university’s development program in 2027.
