Journalists with managerial competencies, primarily in digital and project management. This is the goal set by the State University of Management and the TASS news agency: the partners plan to jointly develop higher media education programs.
The agreement was reached at a working meeting at the State University of Management between Rector Vladimir Stroyev and Deputy General Director of TASS Vyacheslav Umanovsky. Having recently assumed the position of deputy head of the agency, Vyacheslav Umanovsky took charge of TASS’s educational direction and proposed to use the experience of the State University of Management in management to create joint programs in media communications.
“Within the partnership with the State University of Management, for example, it could involve the creation of a master’s level educational program so that journalists can acquire managerial competencies, especially in digital and project management,” explained the TASS representative.
The rector of GUU, in turn, noted that the university is ready for joint programs to train managers in the information environment not only within higher education but also starting from general secondary schools.
TASS is now actively developing its own educational projects, primarily additional professional education. The agency is opening specialized departments in state universities and certifying master’s programs.
The conversation shifted from graduate school to high school. GUU operates a Pre-University Program: in its 10th and 11th grades, students complete the school curriculum while simultaneously studying subjects in the chosen university track: socio-economic, humanities, and technological (IT).
There is a great demand to study here. “In 2026, when entering our school, the competition was very high — 500 applicants per 100 places, and the number of applicants continues to grow,” Vladimir Stroeve said during a tour of the Pre-University. According to the rector, due to such popularity, in the future paid places may possibly be added alongside the budget-funded ones.
The guest was then shown the technological and media capabilities of the university. The university media center, according to the rector, “produces informational products at a level surpassing the capabilities of some regional TV channels.”
Vladimir Stroev also spoke about the campus system of the State University of Management: all the university’s buildings (educational, administrative, laboratory, sports) are gathered in one area, and together they form a real “university world.”
After the tour, Vyacheslav Umanovsky met with the students. He talked about his career as a journalist, TV and radio host, as well as about the direction of the Russian media industry. The main trend, according to him, is multimedia: the same information is presented in different formats and promoted through different stories.
Separately, the guest spoke about journalistic ethics and why professional journalism should not be confused with amateur journalism.
“For me, a journalist and a blogger are different concepts. The key difference lies in the level of preliminary preparation and the degree of responsibility that a journalist feels towards their audience. A true journalist must sometimes know more about the interlocutor than they do about themselves, win their trust for a confidential conversation, rather than provoke for the sake of scandal and likes,” summed up the TASS top manager.
