Moscow is actively developing environmentally friendly, safe, and comfortable ground electric transport. Innovative vehicles deliver passengers to rail frame stations as well as to important social, cultural, sports facilities and other key points of routes. Necessary transport infrastructure is also being created. Thus, the “Presnya” operational site became the ninth that serves only electric buses. Now, on all routes of ground transport in the capital, only Russian-made vehicles operate, noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.

“By the order of Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to expand the network of electric bus routes and develop infrastructure for modern equipment. The transition of the ‘Presnya’ site to environmentally friendly transportation has become another important step in this direction. The fleet is designed for 100 innovative new generation A5 vehicles to be delivered in 2026,” said Maksim Liksutov.

At the site, 10 ultra-fast charging stations with inverted-type pantographs have been installed. They service the new generation A5 electric buses delivered this year, which operate on six routes across three administrative districts of the capital.

The territory was equipped to ensure employee comfort: rest areas, sports facilities, and a medical station were set up. More than 150 Mosgortrans drivers work at the site.

Eco-friendly transportation

Since 2018, innovative electric-powered vehicles have been arriving in the capital. Today, the network of ground electric transport covers all administrative districts of Moscow. Electric buses feature smooth rides, the absence of noise and vibrations, providing an even higher level of travel comfort for passengers. On every weekday, they make on average over 1.2 million trips on electric buses, and since 2018 their total number has exceeded 1.1 billion.

With new equipment deliveries and the development of charging infrastructure, even more electric bus routes will appear in the city. Moscow’s order for the creation of equipment supports employment in the regions and stimulates the development of domestic industry.

Electric transport provides the highest level of service. Low-floor electric buses are fully equipped for the comfort of passengers with reduced mobility. They feature a folding ramp and driver call buttons. If necessary, the driver will assist in boarding and alighting from the vehicle.

Bicycles, strollers, or large luggage can be conveniently placed on the accumulation platform. USB slots are installed in the cabin for charging gadgets. Media screens display current information about the nearest stops and possible transfers.

The climate control system allows you to maintain the optimal cabin temperature year-round. An air curtain activates when the doors are opened.

In addition, there are buttons for selective door opening. For passenger safety, the vehicle is equipped with video cameras both outside and inside. Digital validators are located near the doors, allowing payment for the ride in any convenient way.

Since 2022, the city has been supplied with upgraded equipment vehicles. These electric buses feature adaptive cabin lighting that changes from a cool shade to a warm one at 14:00 for passenger comfort. The front route indicator has been increased by 18 percent, allowing the number to be seen from afar. An electric heater is installed in the cabin, which does not affect the environment and maintains an optimal temperature. Additionally, the new equipment’s range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers, while the vehicle’s weight has remained the same.

New generation electric buses

In 2025, new-generation KAMAZ-52222 electric buses entered service. Thanks to the redesign, the storage area increased by 15 percent. The cabin now includes space for hand luggage, and the door structure has been changed. The climate control system has become more efficient, and light strips indicating door opening and closing have been installed on the doors. The exterior of the vehicles now better aligns with modern trends in global industrial design.

The new generation of electric buses is being developed taking into account the operational experience of earlier models and passenger feedback. Since entering service, the vehicles have traveled over 10 million kilometers and have proven themselves well. This equipment is serviced at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.

In total, electric buses operate at 13 Mosgortrans facilities. Moscow was the first in Russia to start building modern depots for such transport. In 2022, the first electric bus depot in the country and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs (TiNAO). The vehicles started running on routes in TiNAO.

A year later, the “Mitino” park was built in the northwest of the capital. After its opening, electric buses began to run on routes in 20 districts of Moscow and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative park — “Saltykovka” — started operating, serving routes in the east.

The main advantage of electric buses is the lack of negative impact on the city’s ecology. According to MosEcoMonitoring of the capital Department of Environmental Management and Protection, thanks to the replacement of buses with this innovative type of transport in the city of Moscow from 2018 to 2025, it was possible to avoid the emission into the atmosphere of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and 300 thousand tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases.

In 2025 alone, approximately 380 tons of pollutants and 110 thousand tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases were avoided.

In accordance with the objectives of the national project “Infrastructure for Life” In Moscow, great attention is paid to the modernization of social and communal infrastructure, including the increase in the number of convenient urban transport routes and the renewal of the rolling stock. In addition, as part of the national project, the capital has begun developing the Central Transport Hub, which will become a unified circuit with predictable suburban railway transport for more than 30 million residents of 11 regions of the country.
