Beijing, October 13 /Xinhua/ — China, which operates the world’s largest high-speed railway network, has announced a plan for scientific and technological innovations in the railway sector for the period of the 15th Five-Year Plan /2026-2030/ of the country.

This plan defines priority tasks in areas such as fundamental research and advanced technologies, engineering construction, technical equipment, transport services, digital and intelligent railways, security provision, as well as environmentally clean and low-carbon development.

In the plan recently announced by the State Railway Administration (SRA) of China, it is proposed to establish a scientific and technological innovation system by 2030 that will become the driving force for the modernization of railway transport.

During the period 2026-2030, China plans to build about 30 new scientific and technological innovation centers in the railway industry under the leadership of the National Railway Administration, achieve breakthroughs in no fewer than 100 key technologies, and obtain at least 500 significant scientific and technological achievements.

In addition, it is planned to develop at least 20 standard application scenarios or demonstration projects in areas such as the operation system for high-speed trains running at 400 km/h, among others.

With regard to technical equipment, the plan proposes to systematically and orderly advance research in the field of high-speed maglev technology /high-speed train on magnetic suspension/ at a speed of 600 km/h, as well as to carry out testing and verification of key technologies for domestic production.

In the field of transportation services, the plan will contribute to transforming the official ticket booking platform 12306 from a simple ticket purchasing service into a comprehensive intelligent system that serves the entire route, providing integrated solutions for multimodal travel that precisely meet the “individual, differentiated, and diverse” needs of passengers.

According to the plan, China will accelerate the development of large-scale models, datasets, and computing power infrastructure in the railway industry, as well as create at least 20 high-quality industry datasets and more than 20 typical artificial intelligence application scenarios.

In the field of environmentally friendly and low-carbon technologies, the plan proposes to promote the demonstration operation of diesel locomotives with low emissions and low fuel consumption, as well as locomotives and wagons with various power sources, including traction batteries and hydrogen, and to create and improve the carbon emissions management system to help achieve the peak of carbon emissions in the railway industry by 2030.
