This year, comprehensive improvements were carried out in the Maxim Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure (Gorky Central Park). Sergey Sobyanin summarized the results.

“Gorky Park is undergoing major modernization, we are bringing it to a world-class condition. We have completed the first two stages — Pushkin Embankment and Pioneer Pond. Pushkin Embankment has literally become the most popular embankment in our country just months after its reconstruction,” said Sergey Sobyanin during an inspection of the park’s comprehensive improvement.

The plans for 2027–2028 include the landscaping of approximately half of the parterre section of Gorky Park, including the Golitsyn Ponds.

The work of the third stage of the park modernization covered 17.45 hectares, including the square near the main entrance and its arch. Specialists restored the facade and roof, doors, and railings of the observation platform, and added lighting. The square itself was transformed into a newly landscaped area with walking paths and places to rest. More than 15,000 coniferous and perennial flowering plants were planted here, including roses and hydrangeas, and art objects were also installed.

Main fountain

In October, the main works on the modernization of the Gorky Park fountain were completed. Its area increased threefold—from 3,600 to 11,000 square meters (the water surface area is 6,600 square meters). Now the main fountain of the park consists of three basins: one main and two small ones. The number of dynamic water jets increased almost 12 times—from 94 to 1,119, and their maximum height is now 60 meters instead of 25.

Thanks to the reconstruction, the fountain in Gorky Park has become the largest fountain complex in Russia with a projection double-sided water screen of more than 2,800 jets, including over 1,700 jets with a fog effect.

“Modern equipment allows for the creation of a flat water surface on which 3D figures and images can be displayed using projectors and lasers for vibrant light and sound shows,” wrote Sergey Sobyanin on his channel in

“Max” messenger.

On its 30 by 50 meter screen, 3D figures and images — videos, animations, or laser drawings — can be displayed using 10 projectors and 18 lasers.

The underground technical room, located directly beneath the fountain, is also the largest in Russia: its area is 6,500 square meters. It features a unique engineering infrastructure, including 555 circulation pumps, eight compressors, 114 water jets, and over four thousand stainless steel pipeline elements.

For park visitors, a balcony overlooking the main fountain basin has been arranged, and the space beneath the water arches, set around its perimeter, will become a popular place for children’s games on hot days.

The small basins are made flush with the paving — without high edges or barriers. This will allow close access to the water.

“The fountain, in its technical characteristics, is one of the most unique in the world. Work is ongoing. It will be fully operational in May. And in winter, so that the square is not empty, there will be one of the largest ice rinks in Moscow here,” said Sergey Sobyanin.

Sports zone

Work is currently ongoing in Gorky Park to create a modern sports zone. The infrastructure of the previously existing sports ground will be updated, and two new pavilions with a total area of 689 square meters will be constructed there. These will house a café and changing rooms with an equipment rental point. In the parterre section of the park, outdated kiosks will be replaced with modern pavilions that will accommodate catering points, vending machines, restrooms, and security posts.

Following a long-standing tradition, this winter the Gorky Park will feature an ice rink covering 18.3 thousand square meters, capable of accommodating over 10 thousand people daily. The total length of the ice tracks will be 2.3 kilometers.

As part of the fourth phase of the Gorky Park modernization, the total landscaping area will amount to 27.24 hectares, including the Golitsyn Ponds and the green theater on Krymsky Val Street (house 9, building 33). The work is planned to be completed in 2027–2028.

Comprehensive fleet modernization

In 2028, Gorky Park will celebrate its 100th anniversary since opening. Today, one of the most famous and popular culture and recreation parks in Russia consists of four areas with a total area of 212 hectares. These are the Art Park “Muzeon” (21 hectares), the parterre of Gorky Park (48 hectares), Neskuchny Garden (84 hectares), and Vorobyovy Gory (59 hectares).

Viewers will be shown a two-part film about the history of Gorky Park

Every year, Gorky Park welcomes over 36 million visitors. More than four thousand cultural, educational, sports, and entertainment events take place on its grounds and in its pavilions.

“The modernization of Gorky Park is one of the largest city improvement projects in recent years. On this unique green territory, qualitatively new conditions will be created for the recreation of millions of Muscovites and tourists from all over the country and abroad,” wrote the Mayor of Moscow.

As part of the first two stages of the project in 2024–2025, its main promenade — Pushkinskaya Embankment on the section between the Krymsky and pedestrian Pushkinsky (Andreyevsky) bridges — was landscaped. It offers a beautiful view of the Moscow River and the buildings of the Frunzenskaya Embankment.

All-season multifunctional pavilions for various active events have appeared on the embankment. In shape, the unified line of pavilions resembles a cruise liner with lighting and upper decks, where observation platforms are located.

In addition, two new piers have been built. From one of them — Gorky Park on the Pushkinskaya Embankment — pleasure and excursion boats depart. This place is especially popular with park visitors. The second pier houses a patrol and rescue station with a heated pavilion for staff, as well as the necessary equipment and gear.

Another important task of the improvement was the creation of new swimming and beach recreation areas, which were insufficient in Gorky Park. Thus, a multi-level relaxation zone with sun loungers appeared on the Olive Beach.

Big changes also took place at Pioneer Pond. For the first time during the warm season, it is possible to swim and sunbathe there. Comfortable rest areas were arranged on the wooden decking along the shore. In addition, changing rooms with showers were set up, and a cafe with a terrace and a children’s playground was opened.

A sports cluster with a year-round pavilion will open in Neskuchny Garden in 2027.

Among other things, new lanterns and modern small architectural forms were installed here, the lawns were tidied up, and paths made of granite screenings were created.
