In “Moscow Electronic School» («MES“) updated the “Digital Teacher” service for the English language. It now includes listening assignments, whereas previously in the service, children could only complete exercises on grammar and vocabulary. This was reported by the press service of the capital Department of Education and Science.
“The ‘Digital English Teacher’ is an AI-based tool that analyzes a child’s knowledge level and offers exercises to practice topics they find difficult. The service can be used for independent work, as well as in lessons and at home as assigned by the teacher. Thanks to the update, children will be able to develop the skill of perceiving foreign speech by ear, and ‘MESH’ will help them comprehensively master English up to level C1,” noted the agency’s press service.
Six types of tasks have been added to the listening exercise in the trainer. First, students are asked to listen to a dialogue or monologue, then answer questions about the content, determine whether a statement corresponds to what was heard, fill in blanks in a sentence, choose an appropriate picture, restore the sequence of events, or understand the meaning of a word from the audio. Within one attempt, the recording can be listened to twice. If a wrong answer is given three times, the service will show the correct option.
The duration of audio materials depends on the language proficiency level. For example, A1 level uses shorter recordings — from 30 to 60 seconds, B1 — from 1.5 to two minutes, and C1 — from three to five minutes.
When performing listening tasks, the system takes the result into account in the overall progress of learning the foreign language in the service. For completing a task with 100 points, the level on the topic increases by 10 percent, from 50 to 99 points — by five percent, and scoring less than 50 points does not affect the progress indicator for the topic.
The “Digital Teacher” service started operating in 2024. Today it helps to study four subjects: English language, mathematics, physics, and computer science. Over the last academic year, more than 1.3 million people used it over 20 million times.
“Digital Teacher” is available in the web version of the electronic diary, in the mobile application “Diary “MESh”” (section “School”), as well as in the “MESh” library.
“Moscow Electronic School” is a joint project of the capital Department of Information Technology and Department of Education and Science of the City of Moscow. It appeared in 2016. Today, the unified digital educational platform is used by more than 1.2 million schoolchildren, over 1.8 million parents, and nearly 70 thousand teachers. Among the main services of “MESH” are a library of educational materials, electronic diary and journal, “Moskvonok”, “Teacher’s Portfolio”, “Student’s Portfolio”, “Olympiads” and “MESH College”.
