This year marks the 90th anniversary of the victorious completion of the Great March of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army.

The village of Nanyaocze in the Yuyang Tujia-Miao Autonomous County of Chongqing city is located among winding mountains on the border of Chongqing and Guizhou province. More than 50 archaeological and historical monuments related to the Red Army have been preserved here. However, the stories about the Red Army’s stay in these places in the former historical records of Yuyang County consisted of only a few dozen characters.

64-year-old veteran Yan Shensyue has devoted nearly 40 years to traveling around Nanyaocze and the surrounding townships, collecting and systematizing a large amount of valuable historical materials.

In 2016, Chinese language teacher He Lishuang joined the team of volunteer guides, systematized stories about the Red Army, and prepared a tour text of more than 16,000 characters. In 2022, a squad of young guides named “Red Tie” of the pioneer team was created at the central primary school of the Nanyaocie settlement, where he works, thanks to which the stories of the Red Army began to be told in the voices of the younger generation.

Representatives of three generations each tell stories in their own way related to the presence of the Red Army in Nanyaojie, and carefully preserve this “red memory.”
